2024 Reference Value Update Report: Living Wage Report for Urban Tanzania

Abstract

This report updates the Anker Living Wage Reference Value for urban Tanzania to 2024. This was originally estimated at TZS 425,608 (USD 186) for 2020 in the original report.2 The updated value takes into account the inflation accumulated in the country from June 2020 to June 2024 (15.5%). The value updated to 2024 is TZS 482,658 (USD 184), and comprises a net living wage of TZS 417,380 (USD 159) and social security and income tax payments of TZS 65,278 (USD 25). Without accounting for inflation, the living wage estimated in 2020 would not be sufficient for families to have a basic but decent standard of living in 2024, because the purchasing power of the living income would have decreased. Social security contributions and income tax are calculated based on up-to-date tax laws
