Background

This report estimates a living wage for the Southern and Southwestern mesoregion of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, for July 2015. It applies the methodology developed by Richard and Martha Anker (April 2015), which was based upon earlier studies conducted at ILO by Anker (2006a, 2006b and 2011). In order to estimate a living wage for this region, fieldwork was conducted in the coffee growing area surrounding the cities of Guaxupé and Alfenas. Data gathered in interviews with workers’ families and several stakeholders,2 complemented by secondary data, were the main empirical basis for the report.
