The Anker Living Wage Reference Value for 2024 for urban Madagascar is MGA 653,246 per month (USD 148) with a 95% confidence interval around it from MGA 591,335 to MGA 721,620. This is the wage required for urban workers to be able to afford a basic but decent living standard in a typical urban area of Madagascar in 2024. The Reference Value comprises a net living wage (i.e., take-home pay) of MGA 544,154 per month (USD 123) plus MGA 109,092 per month (USD 25) in taxes and social security which would be payable on the living wage.

This report provides an update of the Anker Living Income Reference Value for rural Madagascar, taking into account inflation since the original report. As of 2020, the estimated living income for rural areas in Madagascar was MGA 512,693 per month. This update takes into account the amount of inflation to mid-2024 for the country since June 2020. The accumulated inflation during this period was 35.2%.3 Without accounting for inflation, the living income estimated in 2020 would not be sufficient for families to have a basic but decent standard of living in 2024, because the purchasing power of the living income would have decreased. Therefore, the updated living income for 2024 in rural Madagascar is estimated to be MGA 693,085 per month.
