Series 1, Report 25

By Alexandre de Freitas Barbosa, Ian Prates Cordeiro Andrade, Marina Barbosa e Silva & Sabrina Bowen Farhat

Background

This report estimates a living wage for non-metropolitan areas of the State of São Paulo, Brazil, for February 2020. It applies the methodology developed by Richard and Martha Anker (Anker and Anker 2017) and used in more than 30 countries to estimate living wages. Fieldwork was conducted in the citrus belt region in some of its core cities of Araraquara, Bebedouro and Bauru and surrounding areas. Information was gathered in visits to supermarkets and houses and through interviews with workers’ families and several stakeholders1 , complemented by secondary data from government and researchers, were the main empirical basis for the report.
