Reference Value Report: Living Wage Report and 2024 Update for Rural Egypt
This report updates the Anker Living Wage Reference Value for rural Egypt to 2024. This was EGP 3,957 (USD 252) for 2020 in the original report.2 The updated Anker Living Wage for 2024 is EGP 8,799 (USD 184) per month, comprised of a Net Living Wage of EGP 7,571 (USD 158) and EGP 1,228 (USD 26) which would need to be paid by law in social security contributions and income tax. This update takes into account the accumulated Inflation from June 2020 to June 2024, 105.4%.3 The mandatory deductions were calculated using the most up-to-date tax laws.4 It is worth noting that the Egyptian income tax law was amended in February 2024 to increase the personal allowance on the taxable amount earned per year to EGP 20,000 from EGP 15,000. Without accounting for inflation, the Living Wage estimated in 2020 would not be sufficient for workers and their families to have a basic but decent standard of living in 2024, because the purchasing power of the Living Wage would have decreased.
